  • Of course the "Seven Seas" are the seas of the ancient world when they were often written about for sailors: Mediterranean, Black Sea, Aegean Sea, Red Sea, Adriatic Sea, Persian Gulf, and Arabian Sea (now Indian ocean.) The Five Oceans came later.

  • One must take into consideration the era in which the phrase originated; the sailors who likely coined the term were from the "Ancient" sailing communities of England, France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, not to mention others. What they all had in common was the they all sailed upon the Mediternean where there are seven distinct seas: Alboran Sea Balearic Sea Ligurian Sea Tyrrhenian Sea Adriatic Sea Ionian Sea Aegean Sea These were most likely the "seven Sea" of lore!
